Last Chapter Blues

Stuck on the penultimate chapter. Stuck, stuck, stuck. I know what should happen, but it's not happening. It's like one of those rehearsals in a theatre mystery where the Leading Lady is upstaging everyone and the Villain is sulking and refusing to deliver the lines as written and the Hero keeps dropping his sword and you know the Character Actor is likely to turn up with his throat slit under a pile of curtains at any moment.

And this is a children's book.

Ah, well. I'll take Ellen's advice and rough it out and come back and fix it when I've revised the (currently dreadful) first half. But it is discouraging when things have been going along fairly swimmingly, and suddenly I can't seem to write a good sentence.

Sigh.

Thanks

I almost forgot. Many thanks to matociquala for the new icon. It's from Edward Gorey's The Unstrung Harp OR Mr. Earbrass Writes a Novel. Which should be on every novelist's bookshelf, for easy reference when the Writing Life is giving you an off-day. I bought something like 15 copies when I saw it remaindered several years ago in Boston, and sent them to many writing friends. I think it's OP, but many copies exist on Amazon, and probably elsewhere.

It's prime.

So is this icon. I love it.
