Progress Report

I'm getting there.  12 chapters out of 15 (or possibly 16) drafted.  27,892 words, not counting the ~2000 words that currently indicate the outlines of Chapters 14 and 15 (at the moment, Chapter 13 exists only as a series of largely incoherent notes).  One plot twist inserted today that surprised even me, and the denouement, like distant mountains, looks closer than it probably is.

Can I finish a colorable first draft of this before it's time to dive into pre-Passover prep?

Well, we'll see, won't we?  I'm certainly going to do my level best.

For some reason this post made me envision your WIP as a piece of lace being made on a cushion, bobbins and needles everywhere, parts in various stages of filling-in, parts skeletal.

Not a bad metaphor for my process, actually.

I'm learning how to knit lace, by the way. Half-way through my first "simple" scarf, counting frantically, unknitting frequently, wondering why on earth I'm engaging in this exercise in frustration. Oh, right. I'm a writer. This is part of my definition of fun.

It's very frustrating and then when the mechanics of leaving the holes settles into your hands it gets much better. With any pattern, it's a good idea to always stop in the same point in the pattern (so, knit one entire set of stitches to complete one "cycle" at a time, if you see what I mean) and this is specially useful with lace so you don't miscount your rows and start up again at the wrong one.
